Export Matrix/Yarn mesh to Abaqus

Post by Jan »

Hi...i'm completely new in the TexGen usage, and in the python language!
i'm writing my master thesis right now, and want to model a triaxial braid architecture.
I managed to build up the yarn-geo in texgen, but now i have problems to export in a proper way! If i use the gui export to abaq, only the yarns are in the inp. file. I read in the forum, that die matrix mesh should be there too!
Can anybody help me?!??
Additionally the output to a step-file is not running pretty good! the braided yarns are always with failures after reading the step file with CAE/CAD softare!

hope that someone can help me....

cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Welcome to the forum! If you want to export both yarn and matrix then you need to select the File->Volume Mesh option. This outputs a tetrahedral mesh of both the yarn and matrix.

I would have to look into the STEP output problem.

I'm hoping to release a new version in the next few weeks and this will include the addition of a voxel mesh output to Abaqus which gives the option to save yarn, matrix or both.

Hope that helps,

Louise

Hi Louise,

thanks for your reply and for the hint with the voulme mesh option! I have just seen, the "abaqus" output all the time, and didn't seen the addtional file type *.inp within the volume mesh output!

But now i have the next problem! if i try to export my 3d braid, the input file is very small, and contains just the basic abaq commands, but no nodes or elements! the normal abaq fiel>output>abaq (yarn mesh) runs pretty good!

What do i wrong???

Thx once again for your help! Looking forward to a new release of TexGen! It is a real powerful tool!!!Thx!

Jan

P.S.: I just noticed: With the example files the volumemesh abaq output works! Do have to change anything in my script-file?

Hi Jan,

I've had a quick look. Have you created a domain for your textile? If not then the elements and nodes are not output. Really there should be an error message to prompt you to create a domain if you try to export without one. I will add it to my to-do list!

If that's not the problem let me know and I'll think again.

We would interested to know where you are based and what you're using TexGen for?

Hi Louise,

yes i have created a domain. I don't know what the problem is! Perhaps the architecture of the 3D braid is too complicated. I have created a 2D braid unit cell ( no through thickness fibers ) and the output is working pretty good. Thanks for the hint, that i can choose abq output within the volume mesh option! :-)

I'm using TexGen for my Master-thesis. I'm german and did there the theoretical part of the studies, and right now i'm ending my master in automotive engineering with the thesis work in melbourne, australia. That's the reason why there is always a big time delay between our answers! I think to england i'm 10h upfront! :-)

I wanna build up a CAE material model for braided composites especially for crash simulations. To start understanding the behavior of these special composites, i'm trying to do some FEM unit cell simulations...

Hi Jan,

Your work sounds interesting - it's good to find out what people are using TexGen for.

Does your 3D braid have vertical or near-vertical yarns? Sometimes this causes a problem with the meshing. Otherwise I can't see any other immediately obvious reason why you shouldn't be able to create your Abaqus file. Could you send me a tg3 file and I can run it in debug to see if I can see where it's failing?

Hopefully we'll get it sorted out!

Hi Louise,

thanks for your help!! I can send you the the pyhton files as well if you want! Perhaps you have some professional tips for me as well! :-)

Right now i have created a 3D braid and a 2D braid file. The volume mesh output of the 2d braid composites runs perfect! All the files have the same "basic" python file from the TexGen homepage, which i modified to get first results of braiding composites, and to have a basic idea of python! Can you give me an email address to send you the files?

Another point is, that for me it seems to be quite obvious that especially the step-file output have problems with the "CSectionRotated" function. The rotated yarns are always corrupt if i try to output them to CAD.

Once again thx for your help!
