Exporting textile geometry

Post by krouf@purdue.edu »

Hi Louise

This is Khizar, a grad student at Purdue University, USA. I am trying to use TexGen to create fabric geometry only. My aim is to get fabric geometry from Texgen and import in Patran. After importing, I want to mesh it in Patran. Is that possible if I can get export only fabric geometry from this software? Also, I played with software for a while but having problem of exporting IGES file. Can you please guide me a little how to proceed to avoid exporting errors?

Thanks,
Khizar

Hi Khizar,

The way to export just the geometry from TexGen is to use either the IGES/STEP option or the Export->Surface Mesh option. The surface mesh option allows you to export in either VTK or stl format. The IGES/STEP export uses an open source package, OpenCASCADE, which sometimes doesn't cope with the TexGen geometries. It seems to be more robust if you use a 64-bit version and choosing the faceted rather than smooth option also seems to be more reliable. If you continue to have problems send me an example and I'll work out if it is a TexGen or an OpenCASCADE issue and whether I can do anything to fix it.

Best regards,
Louise

Hello!
Recently i started to work with TEXGEN. It seems to be a very helpful tool to generate braided textiles.
I have some troubles with exporting into .step files.
Using a 4x4 2Dweave with the standard domain, the export to .step works well ! On this model I have now created a smaller domain (domain planes are non orthognal to the global CSYS). With these changes the exporting crashes with "unhandled exception occured" Press abort to terminate the programme". Is there no way to export a smaller RUC with a rotated domain section?

Another problem exists with the export 4x4 weaves with creating sheared domains (like 30°), the same error as mentioned above!

I have installed latest 3.6.1 bundle-version (64 bit)

Thanks for your help!

Hi Seneu,

I think I have found the bug that you have described. Could you send me the tg3 files that you have created and then I can check that I've fixed it. I will then include the bugfix in the next release (hopefully in the next few weeks).

Best regards,
Louise
