Help on FE simulation of 3D woven textile

Post by reza_aut16 »

Hi,

I would like to conduct a FE simulation on 3D woven textile using Texgen as preprocessor and ABAQUS as solver. When I created the my model in TExgen, I exported it as abaqus dry fibre file and set x scale and y scale to 0 and z scale to 0.9 ( for 10 percent compression) and it gives me a .inp file. Now, if I run this inp file by abaqus command in command prompt, the analysis will abort with error. do I need to edit inp file before that? and how can I input material properties, load and boundary conditions as desired in my model?

Please help. I am quite new to Texgen

Hi Reza,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you find TexGen useful.
You can set material properties by using the Modeller->AssignYarnProperties (or Matrix) option. If you use the option without selecting any yarns the properties will be set for the whole textile. If you select one or more yarns and then use the option the properties will be set for just those yarns. (Your mail has made me realise that there is nothing about this in the user guide - I will add something soon).

If you use the Dry Fibre Export option the properties should be set in the .inp file if you have set them in the model. There are some load and boundary conditions set in the dry fibre file but you would probably need to check that these meet your requirements. If you look at the .dat file produced by Abaqus you should get some indication of what the problem was with running your simulation.

I hope that helps,
Louise

Dear Louise,

Thank you very much for the kind reply. I did what you instructed me and I ran the simulation successfully.

I just want to ask one more question. Is it possible to have yarns with different size throughout the thickness of 3D woven structure. I am trying to model attached structures. Please help me how to model those patterns. my issue is the binder yarn modelling as well as different fiber size through the thickness of 3D preform. I appreciate if you could guide me whether TexGen is capable of that or not.

Regards,
Reza

Hi Reza,
You may need to experiment a little to find the best method for creating your textiles. It may be possible to use one of the standard weaves in the 3D weave wizard and change the yarn sizes in the Weave Pattern dialog. If you right click on the numbers to the side of the yarns in this dialog you can change the sizes of individual yarns.
Alternatively, having created a textile you can then change cross-sections as described here: http://texgen.sourceforge.net/index.php ... s-Sections

You will have the most flexibility if you create your textile using a script. You then have complete control over the yarn paths and cross-sections etc and create the textile to be exactly to your specification.

Best regards,
Louise

Hi Louise,

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate if you could guide me to any tutorial on scripting with texgen, as you mentioned as the most flexible method to create my patterns.

Thank you
Reza

Hi Reza,

There is information on scripting in TexGen here: http://texgen.sourceforge.net/index.php/Scripting_Guide and a complete list of functions available via the API is available here: http://texgen.sourceforge.net/api/

I am currently working on a scripting guide document which, hopefully, should be available in the near future.

Hi Louise

Working with Modeller module is very straight forward. I am just wondering if I change the warp yarn width for one layer of an orthogonal 3D weave (by using section tool) or move one yarn by changing the coordinate system, does it affect the .inp file Texgen will generate for ABAQUS? because I get error of improperly surface definition while I run the job in ABAQUS.

Previously, without changing the cross-section of particular layers, and keeping the default values I was always able to run the FE simulations without error

really appreciate if you could help, I guess it might be an issue in Texgen

Hi Reza,

I think you were doing a dry fabric export? The only thing that springs to mind is that, if you've manually changed the yarn positions, the weave pattern generated by the wizard may no longer correctly represent the textile and may lead to incorrect contact definitions when the textile is exported. That's really just a guess though. Would it be possible for you to send the model which is causing problems and to give more information about the actual error? I might then be able to work out what the problem is.

Best regards,
Louise
