Fabric orientation layup

Post by carbonfy »

Hi everyone! :)

I am a very new user of Texgen and I would like to model a unidirectional fabric with different layup orientation. I have few questions as below:

(a) I have been using the GUI interface but through "Modeller" option but could not find any option to change the orientation of the yarn. Could someone please assist me on this?
Rectangular Yarn width: 6.35 mm
Yarn thickness: 0.2 mm
Gap between Yarn: 0.2 mm
Layup [+45/0/-45/90]3s (total of 24 layers)

(b) As I will need the fabric to be compressed as certain volume fraction, will I be able to set the volume fraction by using Texgen?

Cheers!

Hi,
If you want to change the orientation of the yarns in the GUI you will need to change the position of the nodes. Make sure that you have the nodes (and probably the yarns) rendered and then if you select one of them you will see its position in the controls window. You can either type a new position in there or move the node by dragging it to the correct position. If you know the node positions it may be quicker to write a script.

You can't select a volume fraction using TexGen. You can use the built in functions to find the volume fraction of the textile you have created. If you want to compress the fabric you will either need to export it and run a simulation which performs the compression or create the as-compressed model in TexGen in the first place.

Hope that helps,
Louise

Re: Fabric orientation layup & Import volume mesh

Post by carbonfy »

Hi louisepb

Thank you for your reply, your suggestions were very helpful and clear. I have created my model but now I'm having problem to export the volume mesh from Texgen and then import the .VTU files to CFX. I'm following the tutorial on Flow simulation using TexGen and CFX (Page 11&12) http://texgen.sourceforge.net/workshop/ ... alysis.pdf

I have tried importing the 2-D Weave script provided in Texgen to CFX, and it was successful.
However, I can't import the LayeredTextile script provided in Texgen to CFX, with the error message in CFX:

ERROR
There was a problem importing the mesh from the requested file.
The importing process reported the following problem:

Unable to import mesh: Couldn't determine number of nodes.

I'm having the error message when trying to import my own model. Could you please suggest on how to solve this error?

Thank you

Re: Fabric orientation layup @ import volume mesh

By the way, this is the model that I have created.
3 layered 3sim noncrimp.zip
Noncrimp unidirectional model
(202.09 KiB) Downloaded 161 times
It took about half an hour to create the VTU file by using Export --> volume mesh --> Linear --> Periodic meshing --> Material Continuum --> default seed size and merge tolerance

Hope someone can suggest on how to export the .VTU volume mesh file to CFX.

Thanks!

Hi,
This has thrown up some issues for the volume mesh generation. I think that the algorithm used struggles with the layered textile because the projections of the yarn edges onto the x-y plane which are then used to generate a triangulated mesh of the top surface are very close together. If you look at the .inp the mesh hasn't been generated. I will investigate this. Sorry not to have got to it sooner but I've been moving to a new computer and am still getting all my development code up and running so that I can debug.

Best regards,
Louise

Hi,
For more complex layups you would probably be better to use a voxel mesh export at the moment. A colleague has found a way of importing the .inp file produced by TexGen directly into CFX. There are instructions here: http://texgen.sourceforge.net/index.php ... CFX_Export (I will upload some images of the dialogue boxes shortly). For your non-crimp textile I think that this should be ok if you choose a voxel depth which conforms the the height of your textile.

Hope that helps,
Louise
