Units used

Post by Hemanth_T_N »

Hi Dr. Louise and Everyone,
I have two questions,

1) In TeXGen exported abaqus input file the material properties of yarn and matrix are in Pa (or N/m2) units. However the length scale used in defining the part geometry (Nodal Coordinates of RVE finite element mesh) is in mm. Does TeXGen account for this inconsistency in units in its algorithm for calculating the effective elastic constants? or I should feed the material properties of the yarn and matrix in MPa (N/mm2)?

2) I have a feeling that the G_13 (G_xz) and G_23 (G_yz) are interchanged in the generated RPT file (which shows the calculated effective elastic constants). I mean what TeXGen shows as G_13(G_xz) matches with my result for G_23 (G_yz) and vice versa. I applied displacement periodic boundary conditions to calculate the effective elastic constants. Is this a bug in TexGen .?

Have a great week!

Hey all!,
The reason I ask the first question is because even though I feed the material properties in MPa in TexGen GUI, those material properties are in Pa in the exported abaqus input file.

Hi Hemanth,

TexGen will always convert properties to SI units and export those, irrespective of which unit you use as input. As far as I'm aware the EffectiveMatPropRVE and dataHandling scripts deal with the fact that the TexGen mesh is specified in mm but you should check the values which are output and verify yourself what the units should be.

I will take a look at the G13 and G23 values. As I said, this script was written by a colleague (who has now left the university) so I will have to work out what it's doing.

Best wishes,
Louise
