can't export smooth STEP file

Post by gaojin »

hello everyone,

I establish a 3X3 model in TEXGEN and tried to export the model as STEP format ,I found that when I choose the "smooth yarn surface" in "export options" ,there will be errors in the exported file .The fiber and matrix lose their surface and the geometry are out of shape.
But when I choose "Faceted" , I will get a quite normal 3D model, does anyone knows why ?

Thanks

the model I established

Hi,
The STEP export uses the Open CASCADE library which seems to be less reliable in exporting the smooth geometries than the faceted oneS. Unfortunately my laptop has just died so I can't actual ly run TexGen at the moment. If you want to send the tg3 file then I will take a look when I'm able. Not entirely sure when that will be as we're moving to home working at the moment Sorry not to be more help but I hope you'll bear with us in the current circumstances.
Best wishes,
Louise

Thank you so much louise, I have sent the tg3 file to your Email due to the limit of the maximum allowed attachment size. I will be glad if you spare some time to check the file. I know there is a global catastrophe nowadays and I also suffered from that a lot. Wish you all the best!

Hi,
I now have a replacement laptop but it may take me a couple of days to reinstall everything and rebuild TexGen. I've received your file so I'll take a look at it when I'm back up and running. Our uni is closing on Friday so I will be working from home from next week but hopefully I'll be able to keep working.

I'll be back in touch as soon as I can,
Best wishes,
Louise

Hi Louise

I tried again and now I found my TEXGEN just can't export warp yarns, maybe that's why I got broken geometry ,but how can I solve the problem ?

HI,

I am starting to look at the step export issues. Please could you send the model you're having problems with so that I can track down the problem.

Thanks,
Louise

Hi,

It would be simpler if you could raise an issue on GitHub, including the problematic model.
Thanks,
Louise

Hello,

I am Aditya and I am encountering same problem. I just wanted to know if you have found any solution or alternative?
I need smooth part for my project and I am not getting good geometry of the binding yarns. Additionally, I cannot seem to find any other way I can use mesh exports to impart BCs and loading.
I am novel in this area, so please help me if you can.

Regards
Adi

Hello Adi,

I'm afraid that the smooth export tends to be less robust than the faceted which, I'm afraid, is due to the OpenCASCADE library used and out of our control. You could try increasing the resolution on the model and then exporting the faceted version which will improve the model. Please be aware that you won't have any orientation or volume fraction information with this export method, just the geometry.
I don't quite understand your comment about boundary conditions and loading. If you use the voxel, dry fibre or volume (tetrahedral) mesh exports then these will be included in the inp file which is generated. There is a video about exporting models here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVME9evj0kc

I hope that helps,
Louise
