I have a question: which format do you use to export the volume
of the fibre-yarns and of the matrix? I use the STEP-file, but while I get
the volumes of the fibre-yarns there, I cant get the volume of the matrix
(only a cube volume for the domain without the "wholes" for the yarns).
Is there any possibility export the matrix-volume?
Best regards,
Robert

Hi Robert,
I'm using an open source tool called OpenCASCADE essentially to replace the ACIS solid modeller. However OpenCASCADE does not seem to be very good at subtracting yarns from the domain. It either took a very long time to do or crashed completely. Since it is unstable I thought it would be better to just output the domain as a convex volume without the holes in it and let the user do the subtraction in whatever software package they are using.
I have used ABAQUS CAE to subtract the volumes and it is a very quick operation and didn't crash for me. I don't know what CAD package you are using but it should have the ability to subtract volumes, you will need to do this step manually.
Look in the documentation of your CAE package for Boolean Operations or Volume Subtraction, Intersection, Cut, etc...
Let me know how you get on,
Martin.

I am trying to generate meshes for textile composites using commercial software programs like Abaqus/Gambit/patran etc. I know that Martin talked a little bit about generating Abaqus model.
I was able to import iges outpout of Texgen3 and import it in Abaqus. As you discussed, the matrix is just a cube with the holes for the yarns, I was wondering what operation Martin used to subtract volumes? I am a reasonably good user of Abaqus, but might not be a very proficient user.
If possible, could you throw some light on how do you do (voxel based) meshing?
Thanks,
deepak

Its a boolean subtraction operation, you can do it in ABAQUS/Gambit and probably in patran too (never used it though). Have a look at your software docs on where to find it in the menus, I couldn't tell you off the top of my head.anndee108 wrote:I am trying to generate meshes for textile composites using commercial software programs like Abaqus/Gambit/patran etc. I know that Martin talked a little bit about generating Abaqus model.

Again the meshing step is something that can be done in an external tool other than TexGen, please refer to documentation for the software you are using on how to do that.
