Knitted textile

Post by sigal »

Hello
I'm new with TexGen  ,and have a very basic question: I have the mechanical properties of a certain yarn and would like to predict the mechanical properties of a knitted fabric made from this yarn. Is that possible with TexGen ??? if so: do I need to sketch the knitted textile myself? or is there some source of ready made textile architectures that I can use (other than weaves)? If not, does someone know about such software/ mathematical model?
Thanks

Knitted textile

Post by louisepb »

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you find TexGen useful. As you can see from the image on the TexGen website main page http://texgen.sourceforge.net/index.php/Main_Page it is possible to create a knitted textile using TexGen. The python script for this can be found in Apendix D of Martin Sherburn's thesis here http://etheses.nottingham.ac.uk/303/1/thesis-final.pdf This may not be exactly the same as your fabric but will hopefully point you in the right direction. You can assign mechanical properties to the yarns using the Modeller->Yarn Properties option.

I hope that helps,

Louise

Hi Louise
Thank you very much for your help. I imported the python script into TexGen and now have knitted fabric to work with. but there is still something that I don't understand: If I assign the yarn properties, how can I conclude on the fabric properties?
Thanks,
Sigal

Hi Sigal,

You will need to use the model to run an FEA analysis to give you the fabric properties. For a knitted fabric you could use the Abaqus Dry Fibre export to give you a file for a volume mesh in Abaqus .inp format. I think that other FEA software would also be able to import this format (although I'm not an FEA expert so I'm not 100% sure about that! )

Hi Dr. Louise,

I was not able to install the latest version of Texgen, instead I got "texgen-bundle-64bit-Python26-3.10.0.exe" installed onto my computer. I am trying to make a knit structure. I found the script in Appendix D of Sherburn,2007 dissertation and made a script out of it. Could you please provide me guidance on how to upload the script into Texgen?

Thank you,

Hi,

If you are having problems downloading the latest version it might be worth trying the suggestion here http://texgen.sourceforge.net/phpBB3/vi ... f=1&t=5296 I am still trying to work out what the problem is.

You can run a script from TexGen using the Python->Run Script option. There is also a version of the WeftKnit script available here https://github.com/louisepb/TexGenScripts

Hope that helps,

Hi Dr. Brown,

Thank you for your reply. I am able to build knit textile structures using the script in Github. I went over your article titled "Fabric Sensors-Modeling Deformation in Textiles". In that article, could you tell me how you build 3X3 unit cell. What part of the script I need to modify?

Hi,
To change the size of the textile that you are working on you need to change the size of the domain. You could either do that within the user interface using the Edit Domain option or change the size of domain specified in the script.

Hope that helps,

Hi Dr. Brown,

What is "d" in the domain? I tried to add domains in the x direction to make 3x3 unit cell but I was not able to draw the structure. Could you provide me more details on that?

Thanks,

Hi,

Use of the domain is described in the User Guide here: http://texgen.sourceforge.net/index.php ... ide#Domain

Hi,

Thank you for your help. I was able to make 3x3 single jersey structure. I have one more question for you. How can I make rib structure or interlock structure?
How can I insert a conductive yarn in these knit structures?

Hi,

If you want to create different knitted structures then you'll need to write new scripts to generate them. I would guess that you could use the weft knit script as a starting point to get the single stitch shape.

We haven't got as far as simulating a conductive yarn. I would think that you could either generate a very fine yarn to sit alongside the existing yarns or modify the properties of the knitted yarns. Not sure if there's any literature on approaches that people have taken to date but if you find anything I'd be interested to hear about it!

Best wishes,

Hi,

I was able to export the knit structure into Abaqus and trying to run a tensile test. I applied boundary conditions on one side and applied load on the other side of knits. My job aborts due to two different errors. These errors are as follows;
1-Node set assembly_dummy0 has not been defined.
2-A boundary condition has been specified on node set assembly_dummy0 but this node is not active in the model.

What should I do to run this job successfully?

Thank you,

Hi,

It sounds as though you've tried to specify a boundary condition for a node set that doesn't exist. If you look at the .inp file you should be able to see exactly what node sets etc you have set up. You possibly need to either remove the boundary condition or specify the node set?

Kind regards,

Hi Louise,

I modified the knit structure to prevent the interpenetration problem. Now I am trying to change the loop length of the knit structure in Python console (sy= r*6). I don't want to change it in the script since I already ran the simulation in Abaqus successfully.
How can I do that?

Thank you,
