Hello everyone,
I need some help understanding my results from Abaqus. I modeled an orthogonal unit cell weave in TexGen and imported it into Abaqus to run a tension, compression and shear test using ENCASTRE and displacement boundary conditions. I assigned a transversely isotropic material model to the yarns and an isotropic material model for the matrix. However, in the output, it seems the matrix area does not deform as much compared to the yarn areas, which doesn't make sense because the matrix has a weaker Young's modulus, making it more prone to deformation right? I'm attaching a picture of the Abaqus visualization output of the deformed unit cell under shear displacement, as well as a picture of the boundary conditions.

Hi Abigail,
I'm not the best person to comment on the results of ABAQUS simulations or its use but it looks like you probably haven't selected the best voxel size to capture the features in your textile. The voxels look large in comparison to the yarn dimensions (as much as can be seen from the image). Have you tried using your model to predict mechanical properties using the inp as set up by TexGen? If you run the analysis as described here http://texgen.sourceforge.net/index.php ... and_Abaqus you could see if you get sensible results for the mechanical properties of the textile. This might help you to identify whether it's your mesh resolution or material properties properties which are the issue. If you get sensible results for the mechanical properties then you probably need to look at whether you have set up your boundary conditions appropriately.
